History
Football came to Kerala in the last decades of the nineteenth century. It was the British army that introduced football in Malabar. The natives of Malabar learnt the primary lessons of the game imitating the British army officials. Soon it acquired popularity in Kannur, Malappuram and Kozhikode.
Sevens is an indigenous football game of Eranadu area. Originated and developed at Malappuram, it continues to be the most important and popular pastime of the region. It is interesting to note that there are more than hundred sevens tournaments held annually in Malappuram. The uproar of sevens fills the football grounds of each and every village of Malappuram throughout the summer season.
Post-harvest paddy fields will turn into grounds for sevens. It will continue until the rainy season. Even during heavy downpour sevens will be played. Tirurangadi has always held a prominent place on the football map of Malappuram. The renowned MK Samad Memorial Football Tournament, hosted in Tirurangadi, stood among the most prestigious Sevens Football tournaments in the region, drawing attention from players and fans alike. Inspired by this rich legacy, and driven by a shared vision among local sports enthusiasts, former players, and community leaders- Tirurangadi Sports Academy was established in 2022 to preserve and elevate the town’s football heritage while promoting the overall development of sports across Tirurangadi and its surrounding villages.
